Wildflower Seeding

Remit of this project was to establish a strip of Wildflowers alongside a busy main road in Pembrokeshire. To increase the biodiversity, cornfield annuals and native perennial wildflowers were sown mid April. The cornfield annuals were used to give a early splash of colour to enhance the area. These proved very popular during the summer of 2025 this made it a good talking point raising the profile of Wildflowers.

The cornflowers and poppies will not be so prolific in the following years. This is due to the fact that as the names suggest they are more suited to growing in cornfields than grassland. Poppy seed will sit dormant in the soil for up to a hundred plus years, requiring the soil to be disturbed traditionally by ploughing to trigger germination. So in year 2 (2026) native perennial wildflowers which are more commonly seen in traditional hay meadows will be more dominant and in the years to come.
